This article is for those who are just getting into backpacking. Not that this is the only way to do it, but one of many. The cool thing about backpacking is trying out a lot of different ideas. Here are a few things to think about.
Backpacking is an enjoyable way to experience nature and access remote terrain. Just remember it gets easier every time you go.
It’s a great way to get closer to your family and the kids will find out that there is more to life than TV and video games.
1. Know your equipment: Before heading out for a trip, make sure you know how to use all equipment. Try setting the tent up in your backyard and know the terrain may not be as level as it is in the backyard. And it’s no fun trying to learn how to setup a tent after dark, in the pouring rain. You may want to figure our how to turn on your Coleman stove and lantern. (or other brand)
2. Check your equipment: When you are packing for the trip, check to make sure everything is in good shape, that the tent poles are really in the tent bag. Just because they are brand new doesn’t mean it is perfect. just a general making sure you have everything you need. Make a checklist of your equipment and check off each item as it is packed, then you will make sure nothing is left behind.
3. Trip Itinerary: Make sure someone you trust, knows where you are going, and when you will be back. Try to make sure you are back by the time you said you would be and let that person know you are back. Study a map or guide to know the terrain you’ll be hiking and estimate the time it will take to arrive at your destination. Make sure someone knows where you are and when to expect you at your destination.
Obtain necessary permits and reserve campsites in advance, and check local regulations to avoid fines. Know the area’s weather patterns and accommodate for time of year. Always be prepared for the worst weather.
4. Be knowledgeable of Basic First Aid and CPR: If something happens to someone in your group you should be able to do some basic treatments, but only do this if you are sure you know what you are doing, otherwise you could cause more harm than good.
5. Campfires: Keep them small, there is no need for a large bonfire out there, a small fire is more than enough. Make sure someone is attending to the fire while it is burning and make SURE the fire is completely out before leaving it. Too many forest fires have been started by fires that were not put out properly!
6. Clothing: Remember, it’s very easy to perspire, even in the winter, so dress appropriately in layers and be prepared for changing conditions, temperature changes at higher altitudes, and evenings. Always pack rain gear.
7. Your backpack: The pack shouldn’t weigh more than 25 percent of your weight, so take only what you need. Pack as light as possible, the lighter the pack the more enjoyable it will be to carry it.
8. Your vehicle: Occasionally a vehicle left at the beginning of the trail are being broken into. The best way to hopefully avoid this happening to you, is to not leave anything of value in sight. Some people will even leave the glove box open so someone looking into the vehicle can see there is nothing of value in it. Leave the radar detectors and garage door openers at home, instead of trying to stash them in the vehicle.
9. Extra set of keys: Make sure someone else in your group has a set of keys to the vehicle you came in.
10. Cell phone: Do not rely on your cell phone to call for help. There may not even be a signal where you are. And you may not be able to call 911 for help.
11. Wild animals: Go on admit it, you want to see some. But from a distance. Know the animals that you may encounter so you will be prepared when you see them.
Take a lot of pictures to enjoy the views as you see them. And so others can see them when you get home. Get to your planned campsite early enough to have plenty of time to get it set up easily. Be flexible, if it is pouring the rain when you’re ready to go hiking, just relax a little more and see if it decides to quit. So what if you have to start a little later. You are not on a schedule or at least you shouldn’t be.
And last but not least: ENJOY yourself! And I'll see you on the beaches of the world.
